introduction

The Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers (RCS) was established in 2010, under the artistic direction of Jin Chengzhi.

Initially, the RCS began as a choral hobby group composed of students from the Conducting Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. With its membership expanding, it gradually evolved into a non-professional music ensemble deeply rooted in Shanghai, comprised of seasoned chorus enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds nationwide. Currently, the ensemble boasts nearly a hundred members. Besides original compositions, the RCS also performs classical repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to contemporary works by domestic and international composers.

One of RCS's defining characteristics is their focus on performing original compositions. As the permanent conductor and resident composer, Jin Chengzhi has contributed over a hundred original choral works to the ensemble, including nine choral suites. These works vividly portray the daily lives and spiritual world of contemporary individuals, showcasing diverse musical styles and themes. Some of his works explore the integration of ethnic music and chorus, such as "Jia Xuan Ci", "A Trip to the White Horse Village", and " The Land of Luocha: Chapter of the Mountain ". Others provide comfort and healing, such as "Farewell" and "What I Adore", while some, like "So Far, the Sofa is So Far" and "What I Do Is For Your Own Good", imbue humor.

The Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers dedicate themselves to promoting the allure of choral performance and exploring the boundaries of choral artistry. To date, RCS has held over a hundred dedicated concerts in iconic music halls across numerous cities, including the Beijing Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall. In the professional arena, RCS has won the CMIC (Choral Musicianship Committee) Music Award for "Ensemble of the Year" (2017) ,the Ganlan Art Award for "Most Popular Performing Group" (2022) and the second place in the Tolosa Choral Contest 2023.

RCS also actively participates in socially significant activities through music and other forms, the chorus is frequently invited to perform on television shows and various streaming platforms. So far, RCS has amassed millions of followers on social media.
